Eating Well?
How many times every day are we told we need to eat better. Better quality?..What does that mean? Organic?..The supermarkets are making huge profits on this little word. Day after day someone issues a report to say such and such is good for us, is bad for us, is good for women and bad for men or vice versa. Anyone out there as confused as I am. A few years ago my Doctor told me to get a grip on my cholesterol level. So what did I do? I bought a load of cookery books telling me how to feed myself to reduce the level of cholesterol. That was when I discovered there was good fat and bad fat, but which bit was good, and apparently I needed both. We're told saturated animal fats are heavy and harden our arteries. But any good chef will tell you to buy beef/steak with fat grained in it because it tastes better. I started spending hours wandering round the supermarket trying to understand the labels. I gave up in the end. Now I do what I always did, I eat pretty much what I like, and I only buy fresh stuff. Tins of soup? Forget it it. I just throw some left overs into a saucepan with some extra flavours, boil it up, blitz it...yummy. Ready meals? No way, they taste 'orrid anyway. Is it my taste buds getting old or are the contents of those pretty packs getting less and less flavoursome? Bored with the same old flavours? Not me, I rarely follow a recipe, I just chuck some flavours in and it's different every time. What's my favorite cook book? Mrs. Beaton, written about a hundred years ago. What a star.
